Chandel district bandh ends

Imphal, November 26 2011: The dawn to dusk bandh jointly called by Anal Naga Taangpi (ANTA) and Anal Lenruwl Taangpi (ALT) to protest alleged anomalies committed during the electoral roll revision exercise, ended on a peaceful note this evening.

ANTA and ALT observed the bandh at Chandel district headquarters and Chakpikarong subdivision of the district to denounce alleged violation of the election Commission of India's guidelines at the time of electoral roll revision conducted by the State election Commission in the district headquarters and border villages under Khengjoi sub-division.

all normal activities, including educational institutions and public transport, at the district headquarters remained paralysed during the agitation period which was held from 5 am till 6 pm.

Even pedestrians were discouraged from venturing outside with suspected bandh supporters barricading all the transit routes.

Asserting that further agitation will be launched till the demand for overhauling the electoral roll revision is conceded, ANTA president Wang Kohring Victor told newspersons at the district headquarters office of ALT that the electoral roll revision 2012 conducted by the State election Commission is not acceptable to the Anal organisations.

Labelling the said exercise as 'unofficial', he said contrary to the ECI guidelines that SDO/BDO concerned or enumerators assigned for the task conducting door-to-door survey, some State election commission representatives wrapped up the exercise by opening temporary offices at Imphal and Sugnu.

Regretting that substantial adult population of Khengjoi Block had been left out due to non-compliance with the ECI guidelines for extensive on the spot survey, Victor suggested that a fact finding team be constituted to carry out the important task through the application of remote sensing and biometrics devices.

Diverting to other issues concerning the district, the ANTA president contended that one of the Government of Manipur's mega projects namely the proposed Chakpi multi-purpose project contravenes the Environment Protection Act.

Demanding that the detailed project report reportedly handed to the Central Government by the State should be immediately declared as null and void, he cautioned that failure to acknowledge the reminder would constrain tribal organisations to launch democratic form of agitation.

Informing that out of 32 lecturers of United College, Lambung (Chandel) simultaneously transferred from the institution 10 replacement lecturers have been sent, for which Victor heaped praise on the Education Minister, the president suggested that the remaining faculty members be restored without further delay.

ALT president PS Monithring, who also interacted with a media team listed expeditious completion of the Pallel-Chandel HQs road entrusted to the BRO, round the clock mobile network of Airtel and BSNL service providers and regular power supply, particularly in November and December months as students would be preparing for various examinations, as some of the grievances which the district population would be expecting appropriate redressal measures.

He suggested that power supply during daytime could be reduced in order to ensure sufficient supply at night.
