Imphal, August 22 2014 :
Under the aegis of Awaken Artisan Shelter Association (AASHA) and Maruploi Foundation, around 50 transgenders staged sit-in-protest demanding ILPS implementation at Sagolband Salam Leikai today.
Maintaining that indigenous Manipuri people would become a paralysed lot if influx of non-locals is not checked on time, the agitators demanded implementation of ILPS in the State.
Transgenders could not take active part in past people's uprisings due to the stigma prevalent in the society, however, they were inspired with confidence by the recent Supreme Court's ruling of recognising them as the third gender, said a transgender protestor.
Now they have started taking part in people's movement, he said adding that they would join future agitations on other issues as well.
Salai Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup and Nupi Khunai, Lamshang Bazar also staged sit-in-protest at Lamshang Bazar.
Similar protests were staged at Yairipok Bengi community hall, Kongba Thongkhong OMA Club and Thoubal Mela ground.
Pensioner's Welfare Association also staged sit-in-protest at Thongju Boroi Makhong.
