Mass movements on Oct 31 call raised

Imphal, October 28 2019: The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called upon all the people to suspend all normal activities on October 31 and undertake mass protest movements.

Speaking to media persons at Lamyanba Shanglen, Konung Lampak this evening, COCOMI coordinator Sunil Karam said that they have decided to suspend all normal activities for 20 hours from 4 am to 12 midnight of October 31 and carry out different modes of protest movement during these hours.

He urged all the people to leave aside all differences of ethnicity, religious faiths and political affiliations and join the protest movements with a conviction to protect Manipur from all inimical forces.

He appealed to all the people to come out on roads and stage protest demonstrations, and also not to organise any entertainment programme during the 20 hours.

It is expected that a solution to the 22 years old Indo-Naga peace talk would be signed on October 31, and there is a strong apprehension that the solution would have certain points which would disintegrate or pave way for disintegration of Manipur, Sunil said.

The contents of the Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and NSCN-IM on August 3, 2015 have not been divulged yet.

Moreover, the Government of India has been stubbornly refusing to bring out the Framework Agreement for open discussion with all stake holders.

At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assurance given in 2017 that all stake holders would be consulted before working out a final solution to the Naga peace talk can no longer be trusted because the deadline of October 31 is just three days away, said the COCOMI coordinator.

He went on to assert that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has deceived the people of Manipur.

For the past many decades, people of Manipur have been bearing with the Government of India's attitude that disintegration of Manipur is nothing as long as India remains intact.

Compelled by such attitude of the Government of India, COCOMI suggested the idea of staging mass protest movements on October 31 by suspending all other activities, Sunil said.

"The call is a preparation for an unprecedented civil uprising and an unprecedented collective resolution to determine our own future in case the Naga solution challenges the territorial boundary, integrity, economy, cultural practices and administrative setup of Manipur", he elucidated.

COCOMI would also come out with an announcement on the Manipur-India political relationship depending on the Naga solution most likely to be signed on October 31, he said.

He also appealed to all the people not to do or say anything which may hurt sentiment of any community while undertaking mass protest movements on October 31.Essential services including power, water supply, fire services, medical services as well as religious functions and media should not be hampered during the 20 hours of mass protest movements, said the COCOMI coordinator.

Meanwhile, alert public meetings were held today at Mayang Imphal Bengoon and Bishnupur under the aegis of MMWO.

Womenfolk of Arong and Nongmaikhong too organised similar public alert meetings.

They also took out torch rally in the evening.
