Imphal, April 15 2025:
The People's Progressive Alliance (PPA), a coalition of 14 civil society organisations, has issued a one-week ultimatum to the 59 MLAs to form a government, warning that failure to do so would lead to a public signature campaign to gather opinions from legislators and demand the dissolution of the state assembly.
At a press conference held at the' Manipur Press Club, Imagi Meira convenor Th Sujata said the people of the state do not support President's Rule and are increasingly questioning the silence and inaction of the elected MLAs.
She demanded transparency in the form of data on weapon surrenders and recoveries from both valley and hill regions, alleging that there has been no visible effort to resolve the crisis.
This is not the time to act at the behest of the Centre.
President's Rule has not restored free movement on national highways, let alone resolve the broader crisis, Sujata said.
She criticised union home minister Amit Shah's statement in Parliament that no political party had come forward to form a government, forcing the Centre to impose President's Rule.
She questioned the delay in imposing President's Rule despite nearly two years of unrest arid criticised chief minister N Biren Singh's resignation, suggesting it may have been done under central pressure.
She further accused ruling MLAs of prioritising personal political interests over public welfare.
Chipping in Committee on Peaceful Co-existence, Manipur, convenor Sazad Buyamayum echoed similar sentiments, stating that the current administration under President's Rule has failed to manage the crisis effectively.
He urged the MLAs to either form a new government or resign to pave the way for a complete dissolution of the assembly.
He also announced that the alliance would organise protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 .
