Child rights set to break new grounds in Tamenglong

Imphal, January 17, 2011: A stock-taking public hearing on the grievances of public with regard to the fulfillment of children's entitlements to education, health, food and nutrition, safety and security etc is scheduled to be convened in Tamenglong district from January 22. The public hearing will be organized by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur in collaboration with Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Tamenglong district as per the Supreme Court of India writ petition (criminal) No 102 of 2007 in the matter of "Exploitation of children in orphanages in the State of Tamil Nadu" and the concomitant recommendations of National Commission for Protection of Child rights.

The said hearing will be chaired by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tamenglong district and the Sub Deputy Commissioner (SDO) on three different dates.

The first public hearing will be convened at Indoor Stadium in Tamenglong district headquarters on January 22 for Tamei and Tamenglong sub-divisions under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner while the second hearing is scheduled at public ground in Tousem on January 28 for Tousem sub-division with the SDO of Tousem in the chair.

The final hearing will be held at public ground in Nungba on February 4 under the chairmanship of the SDO of Nungba.

It must be recalled that in 2010 over 140 children were trafficked out of Manipur to different parts of the country.

Out of these, around 56 children belonged to Tamenglong district alone, particularly to Tousem sub-division.

In the month of January 2010, 54 young boys from Tousem sub-division were traffic out to Tamil Nadu who were later rescued by volunteers of CWC from a children home run by Roman Catholic missionary called Immanuel.

And again in the month of August that year, 2 young boys were rescued from Haryana.

The figure of child being trafficked out of the State in 2010 showed that Tamenglong recorded the highest in district-wise break up.

A notice received from the Directorate of Social Welfare, government of Manipur, invited all persons including the bonafide residents, civil societies, apex tribal bodies, village authorities/councils, students' unions, NGOs, child rights workers and interested individuals to participate with suggestions, views and comments.
