Imphal, April 15 2025:
The Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long (TAKL) has sought immediate action against construction of a bridge on Maklang river by "unauthorised contractors" .
The bridge is being constructed without any official approval or adherence to the required standards, it said in a statement issued to the media today.
The under-construction bridge is located between Kangkum and Kangpat village.
The bridge would serve as the only vital link for villages in the interiors with Kamjong district headquarters.
Such an important bridge must be constructed with high-quality materials-including certified sand, cement, and steel/iron, and following the standard engineering and safety norms, said the TAKL .
The project must be undertaken only by authorised and technically qualified contractors, as approved by the Government.
Any compromise in the construction quality or process will not be tolerated, it asserted, seeking the attention of the Government for timely intervention.
"We further state that if the work is found to be substandard or fails to meet quality standards, the concerned or authorised Special Contractor-the person who has been officially awarded the tender-shall be held fully responsible.
There will be no room for excuses or blame-shifting," said the TAKL .
Stating that it will monitor the implementation of the project to ensure adherence to PWD guidelines, the TAKL said it is initiating an investigation to ensure there is accountability and integrity in the implementation of the project.
It urged the Government to immediately halt all unauthorized construction activities, and ensure proper reallocation of the work to qualified and approved contractors.
There must be transparency and quality in every phase of the project, it said, anticipating swift and responsible action from the relevant departments.
