Criminal tracking network in the offing

Imphal, November 03 2012: Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India has initiated necessary process to set up a crime and criminal tracking network system across the country.

An official source informed that the tracking system would cover all States and Union Territories of the country.

The system is being taken up as mission mode project under the Government of India's national e-governance plan (NeGP) .

The system would cover 14,000 police stations and 6000 higher police offices spread across India.

Higher police offices include offices of DSPs, Additional SPs, SPs and DIGs.

Though the project would be taken up under centralised planning, it would be decentralised when it comes to implementation.

At the national level, National Crime Record Bureau would act as nodal agency whereas State Crime Record Bureau would function as State nodal agency.

For Manipur, Additional DGP (Law and Order) LM Khoute has been appointed as the State nodal officer.

Core application software for the crime and criminal tracking network system was developed by Wipro.

The system would cover 101 police stations and 115 higher police offices in Manipur.

To operate the project, each police station would be equipped with four computer sets including printers.

Likewise, higher police stations would be equipped with two computer sets each along with printers.

Rolta India Pvt Ltd based at Kolkata has been selected as system integrator for site selection and system installation in Manipur.

BSNL would handle the part of providing network link-up.

It is expected that the network system would be quite helpful in timely collection of information for crime detection, prevention, investigation and supervision of subordinates by police officers.

The network would enable IOs to enter data and information about progress of investigation in different cases.

As such, OCs can easily monitor investigation stages without asking personally.

The system would have a citizens' portal through which people can file any complaint online.

Subsequent police activities regarding the complaints can be assessed online.

Such facility would certainly go a long way in strengthening police-public relationship, added the source.
