Imphal, May 13 2023:
Displaced residents of Moreh, who are taking ref-uge in Lamding Higher Sec-ondary School, raised strong condemnation against armed attack and stone pelting on civilians, who were being evacuated by Assam Rifles from Moreh.
They also demanded an explanation from Assam Rifles for carrying out the evacuation operation during night time and doing nothing when the miscre-ants pelted stones and fired shots towards the displaced civilians.
Leishangthem Tamem, a resident of Moreh, who is in the relief camp, told media persons that this was the third time Meetei population from Moreh fled their homes due to communal tension in the border town.
The main reason behind the hardships besetting the Meetei popu-lation in the border town is lack of security provision, he said while demanding effective security measures to ensure safe rehabilitation of the displaced people.
According to convenor of the relief camp K Ibun-go, the camp was set up on May 10 under the aegis of Khangabok MLA after the government authority start-ed evacuation of displaced people from Moreh.
There are 110 inmates in the camp and another 50 are set to arrive on Saturday night, he informed.
The convenor further said that the displaced people putting up in the camp are facing hardships due to the growing number of people and some people getting sick.
The camp is facing shortage of food, medicines and mattress.
Highlighting the inconveniences faced by the people, he drew atten-tion of the government for a proper policy and to look into the shortfalls in relief camps set up in different parts of the state.
Meanwhile, 110 displaced people are also taking refuge in a relief camp set up by Youth Voluntary Association, Wangjing Tentha at Wangjing Keithel community hall since May 9 .
So far, neither the local MLA nor the DC of the district has visited the camp, according to camp chairman Dr Rajivkumar.
Though there is adequate food as of now, the camp is facing shortage of mattress, he added.
