Shija, AIG to organise liver screening, transplant camp

Imphal, April 15 2025: Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI), in collaboration with the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad, will organise a liver screening and transplant camp at Shija Liver Cirrhosis & Liver Cancer Clinic, Langol on April 18 and 19 .

Dr Sumana Kolar Ramdchandra, who is AIG senior consultant (liver transplantation), and Shija Hospitals Medical Gastroenterology senior consultant Dr Goldie Longjam will be part of the initiative which aims to enhance access to affordable and advanced liver care in the region, benefiting individuals suffering from conditions such as jaundice, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver cancer, ascites, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver kidney failure, and bile duct cancer.

According to a SHRI release, patients will also have the opportunity to consult a visiting team of renowned specialists from AIG Hospitals, including Dr P Balachandran Menon, Director of Liver Transplant, and Dr Sumana Kolar Ramachandra.

Dr Balachandran, who has successfully performed more than 2,500 liver transplants, will bring in over 25 years' experience, it continued while adding that Dr Sumana, who has conducted nearly 2,000 liver transplant procedures, has 15 years' expertise.

Informing that AIG Hospitals, a JCI-accredited, 1,000-bed super specialty hospital based in Hyderabad, is a national leader in advanced gastroenterology and liver care, the statement added that the collaboration stemmed from a formal partnership between Shija Hospitals and AIG, established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on November 30, 2020, to advance super specialty outreach services in liver and oncology care.

It explained that liver transplantation is the most effective treatment for acute and chronic liver failure, especially in end stage cases and living donor liver transplantation, utilising the liver's regenerative capacity, offers high success rates and improved outcomes.

The collaboration aims in providing an affordable liver transplant in the region, it said.

Shija Hospitals, a 350-bedded NABH-accredited institution, has been licensed for liver transplantation by the Directorate of Health Services, Manipur since September 22, 2022.The hospital has successfully completed 117 kidney and 130 corneal transplants, making it one of the leading organ transplant hospitals in the region, the statement added.
