Imphal, July 29 2013: It is not from Ripley's Believe it or Not, but three primary school teachers were found posted at TG Higher Secondary School during a spot inspection conducted by the Democratic Students' Association of Manipur (DESAM) and media persons today.

Apart from coming across many inadequacies and inconveniences being faced by the institute following the decision of the State Government to admit all students who seek admission there, it was also found that three Primary teachers are deputed at the higher secondary school.

Around 2516 students of Class XI and XII are being crammed in the school by dividing Science and Arts students in eight sections each.

While every class has more than 100 students, many of the classrooms are partitioned into two rooms to get the required number of rooms.

Although the number of students has doubled this academic session, the school has only four toilets and a science laboratory having capacity for only 30 students.

As the school now has around 1760 Science students in Class XI and XII, it is questionable whether these students can complete the practical syllabus in an academic session considering inadequate number of teachers and frequent bandhs and other disturbances.

Both in Class XI amd XII Science, 800 students have opted Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects.

In the academic session 2011-12, only 250 students in Science stream, 200 in Arts and 100 in Commerce were given admission in Class XI .

However, from 2012-13 session, intake of students was jumped to 906 in Science, 300 in Arts and 77 in Commerce streams.

Even as the school was yet to solve the problem of infrastructure and teachers inadequacies due to the sudden rise of number of students witnessed in the last academic session, the school has given admission to 903 students in Science, 230 in Arts and 100 in Commerce streams this year following a directive from the State Government.

Classes are being run in 23 classrooms with more than 100 students are sitting in a classroom.

Home Science, Philosophy, Anthropology, Elective Manipuri and Elective Hindi do not have separate classrooms.

It was also revealed during the visit that almost all the subjects do not have required number of teachers.

Two more teachers each are still needed for English, Manipuri, Hindi, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Political Science and Geography while four, one and three additional teachers are required for Home Science, Education and Economics respectively.

Three Primary teachers are among 129 teachers who are teaching the students of the higher secondary school.

Regarding non-teaching staff, the school has two LDCs, one Chowkidar, one Grade-IV employee and one Librarian.

DESAM President Wangmayum Islauddin said that although State Government's decision to give admission to all the desirous students in TG Higher Secondary School was a welcome step for needy students, paying no attention regarding necessary infrastructure, teachers and non-teaching staff would prove disastrous.

Government can't run a school by cramming students like in poultry farms, he pointed out adding that Government should have developed necessary infrastructures before taking in a large number of students to the school.

He also urged the Government not to depute Graduate and Primary teachers in the school.

Principal in-charge T Pramodini said that her school is a premier institute in the State and the school would be able to produce many meritorious students like in the past if the Government provides necessary infrastructure, teachers and staff at the earliest.

She said that toilet has become a major concern as only four toilets can't accommodate such a large number of students.

Saying that the school administration is trying to make up some needs upto some extent with the amount from its meagre fund, Pramodini observed that the inconvenience would be too huge if the current situation remains the same for long.
