New Delhi, September 25 2014: Dr Alana Golmei, general secretary of the North East Support Centre & Helpline, Delhi was honored with the prestigious Assocham Ladies League (ALL) Grassroots Women of the Decade Achievers Award here in Leela Palace, New Delhi today for setting-up the Northeast Support Centre and 24/7 Helpline to prevent harassment, discrimination, and abuse faced by the people from Northeast India living in metros, particularly women.

Dr Alana Golmei, daughter of late Adonbi Golmei (father) and Mrs Asingliu (mother) from Tamenglong headquarters was recognised for her work on the benign cause she has been fighting.

Dr Alana is still single at 39 .

Speaking to Newmai News Network, Dr Alana Golmei said, "I am humbled and feel honoured" by the award.

She received the award from M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty alleviation, who graced the occasion as the chief guest and Dr Harbeen Arora, Global Chairperson, ALL.

Assocham Ladies League honored some other 35 exemplary women achievers namely Meera Munda, social activist; Mehvish Mushtaq, first Kashmiri woman App developer; Anar Patel, founder of Gramshree; Chhavi Rajawat, first woman Sarpanch in Rajasthan who left her corporate job for it; Meenalochani Raghunathan of GMR Varalakshmi Foundation for CSR; Uma Chigurupati of Hyderabad Heritage Foundation; Hiresha Verma of Dehradun who is a social entrepreneur helping women in Uttarakhand to rebuild their lives after the floods through a vibrant mushroom business; Dr Sailakshmi Balijepalli of Ekam Foundation working for zero child mortality; Valli Annamalai from Madurai curbing female infanticide, and others.

Dr Alana Golmei of the 24/7 North East Helpline and Support Center, said on the occasion, "Facing racism in one's own country is the worst nightmare that anyone can face.

I appreciate ALL for acknowledging our support centre and rewarding our small initiative to help remove this scourge" .

Yishey Doma Bhutia from Sikkim, a prolific journalist and writer, who has written several books showcasing the beauty and culture of Sikkim, and engaged with the lives of people at grassroots, said "We need to foster a closer connect between people in the North East and in the mainland, and a National level honor such as this award for me from the Hon'ble Minister is certainly a warm and strong step toward it" .

Dr Golmei has been actively involved in helping the distressed people from Northeast States living in Delhi and NCR since the beginning of NE Helpline.

"She is our sister of NE Helpline team and the Mother of NE youth in Delhi.

We feel very happy and proud of her.

She was always ready to help the NE people in Delhi and its surrounding cities.

She has been running the helpline consistently, which is very much praiseworthy.
