Imphal, April 15 2025:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged MLAs from the State unit of National People's Party (NPP) and Janata Dal (United) to boldly express their opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Act to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and their Central leadership.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan yesterday, MPCC spokesperson Md Rabi Khan said that both JD (U) and NPP supported amendment of the Waqf Act when it was tabled for discussion in the Parliament while here in Manipur an MLA of the NPP has approached the Supreme Court against the Amended Act.
Criticising the JD(U) and NPP for their inconsistent stance on the legislation, he added that the State unit of the two parties voiced their opposition to the Act only after it was passed to gain political mileage.
He urged the MLAs of the two parties to write to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister if they genuinely want the Act to be withdrawn.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act undermines secularism enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution, he said and added that the Congress and some other parties have moved the Supreme Court challenging the legislation which allegedly violates many Constitutional provisions.
The Government amended the Waqf Act to interfere in the functioning of the Waqf Board, he claimed and added that the motion hearing of the legislation will begin on April 16 .
He further claimed that the NDA Government has been scheming to suppress the Muslim community.
