Imphal, November 12 2012: A civilian was killed while another, a cousin of the deceased, sustained injuries when a powerful bomb exploded near Imphal College, along Imphal-Churachandpur road this evening.

The blast occurred five days after a similar explosion took place at Ghari, near Imphal Airport.

According to information culled from the spot, the bomb planted at a garbage dumping site near Imphal College went off this evening at around 5 .

The blast claimed the life of a mason who was on his way back home after a day's work at Ningthemkon while his cousin brother received splinter injuries.

The deceased victim has been identified as Mangte Nungleinin Kom alias Alin (40) s/o Seipu of Khonomphai village, Churachandpur district who was staying at Sangaiprou in a rented house along with his injured cousin brother, identified as Chumpa Kom (20) s/o Atethang.

The Khurpui Lam Organisation has strongly condemned the blast and besides condoling the bereaved family members demanded suitable ex-gratia, job for the widow and the Government to sponsor the education of his son who is studying in Class I .

The Organisation has also urged the Goivernment to bear the medical expenses of the injured victim and appealed to all not to repeat such acts in future.

The injured victim has been treated at RIMS Hospitals.

The blast was so powerful that Power lines nearby snapped besides causing a jolt to the nearby surface.

Imphal West district police personnel and soldiers of 18 Sikh Regt rushed to the spot after the incident.

It may be mentioned that, similar explosion had occurred at Ghari few days back.

The blast had caused injury to five persons including two security forces personnel.

Meanwhile, troops of 28 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under HQ IGAR (South) recovered an IED from Lilong Maringkhul at about 8.30 am today.

A statement issued by the PRO of IGAR (S) said the foot patrol of the Unit, while carrying out search of the area found a suspected IED placed on the road side under a pole covered by a card board box.

The area was cordoned off by the troops and Metal detector team and ED dog of the Unit confirmed the same.

Subsequently Bomb disposal team of Manipur Police reached the location and the IED was diffused.

The IED consisted one RCIED, two kgs of RDX with 1/2 kg ball bearings, one 9 volt battery and RCIED circuit with antenna, the statement informed.

The IED was capable of carrying out of major damage to vehicles plying on the road, civilians and SF in the area.

The extra alertness and vigilance exercised by the troops avoided an incident which would have caused immense damage to civilians, the PRO statement added.
