Meet questions police inaction on missing report
Source: Chronicle News Service

Thoubal, May 23 2022: A public meeting of local residents of Yairipok Changamdabi Makha Leikai along with representatives of different CSOs hosted by the JAC against the brutal killing of Korimayum Abdullah has questioned the delay in taking up necessary actions by police over the missing report filed by the victim's family members.

Addressing a press meet at the residence of Changamdabi GP pradhan after the public meeting, JAC convener Md Ayub Korimayum said that after the victim, who was an army soldier, went missing since he left home in the afternoon of May 16, the family members filed a missing report at Lilong police station on May 18.However, police seem to be doing nothing to trace the whereabouts of the victim, he said while demanding the reason for the delay in investigation.

The convener also questioned the reason for not arresting Tabasum and Md Mujibur, who allegedly held the victim captive in their house after a dinner party.

He also condemned police for not taking up any concrete actions despite some evidential videos and photos which went viral on social media in connection with the murder.

Surprisingly, Tabasum, who is now the prime suspect in the murder, filed a rape case against the victim at Women Police Station, Thoubal on May 19.Instead of tracing the whereabouts of Abdullah, who went missing since May 16, police served a summon notice for the victim on May 20, Md Ayub said, while expressing suspicion if some policemen are involved in the crime.

Keeping in view of the lapse on the part of police in investigating the missing report, the JAC is demanding a magisterial enquiry on the lapses or involvement of police personnel in the crime and to book all the accused, co-accused and co-conspirators within 24 hours, he said, adding that the JAC is also demanding the authority to frame charge against all those involved in the crime within 15 days.

Mention may be made here that police have arrested six suspects for questioning as part of the murder investigation on Sunday.

Meanwhile, AMMOCOC president SM Jalal, who attended the public meeting, stressed the need for proactive service by the law enforcing agencies and taking up swift actions on complaints filed by public in order to avoid crimes.

He urged the government to take up necessary actions to clear the air of doubt that the public and JAC have against the police department, and to conduct a fair and swift investigation while taking into confidence the JAC and their demands.

He also drew attention of the CM to instruct the authority concerned for an unbiased approach in the case to deliver justice to the victim's family.

Muslim Council Manipur president Haji Arafat and MMWO working president Korimayum Boboy expressed belief that Abdullah could have been saved had police acted in time after his family members filed missing report.

They condemned Lilong PS for the delay in investigating the missing report and said that they will extend full support to the JAC and its decision in the pursuit of justice.
