Imphal, September 20 2022:
Socio-political commentator Chongtham Bijoy has said that the failure to follow the court's eviction order regarding a land dispute in Chingmeirong some days back due to protest by local residents will ever remain as an unfortunate event in the history of Manipur.
Addressing media persons at his Lamphel residence on Tuesday, Ch Bijoy said that inability to enforce the court's order in a democratic country has raised a big question and it was very unfortunate that local MLA, government officials and BJYM Manipur unit president stood against the order of the high court without understanding facts and history of the disputed land.
He said that majority of dwelling lands, paddy fields and farm lands in Manipur valley were issued land documents (Patta) only after a survey conducted post World War II and the disputed land in Chingmeirong figured in the survey conducted in 1960-61.While revealing that one Thangjam Thanil filed the last case at the high court after multiple setbacks in previous cases, Bijoy maintained that as the high court did not accept the petitioner's claim it subsequently initiated eviction process.
Translating the court's order into action is one of the key norms of democracy, he said, adding that the culture of annulling court's order in Manipur is very high nowadays.
He further said that the present Chingmeirong issue blew up as the suit land blocks passageway of an influential family and some individuals.
