Campaign launched to end SUPs in schools

Imphal, April 15 2025: As part of the efforts to eliminate single-use plastics (SUPs), the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with ZEO Zone-2, Imphal East, has launched a series of awareness programmes under the theme "Elimination of Single Use Plastic from School Campus".

The initiative kicked off on Tuesday at multiple schools across the district with awareness sessions con ducted at Meetei Mayek High School, Kongba; Wangkhei High School; CC Higher Secondary School, Sanjen thong; Lamphel High School, Top Khongnangkhong; and Morning High School, Kongpal.

Speaking at Wangkhei High School, environmentalist Th Joykumar highlighted the serious environmental hazards posed by single-use plastics.

He said that plastics commonly used in food wraps and carry bags are non-biodegradable, pollute the surroundings, and release toxic gases when burned and cautioned against its long-term impact on soil health.

He reminded that single-use plastics are a major pollutant that harms both human health and the environment.

"Although the Central government has banned them and the Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022 is in place, effective implementation remains a challenge," he noted.

Stressing that public cooperation is essential for achieving the goal of a plastic-free environment, Joykumar urged students to stop using single-use plastics both in school and at home.

At CC Higher Secondary School, principal Khulem Memtombi declared the school campus a single-use plastic free zone, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability.
