CM gives clarion call to tackle global warming
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, July 23 2024: Chief minister N Biren has called upon the people to join hands in fighting the challenges of global warming and contribute in whatever way one could.

The CM made the appeal while speaking as chief guest of the 75th Van Mahotsav, 2024 organised under the theme "Ek Ped: Maa ke Naam" at Chingpu Sabi Lairembi Ching, Lamlai in Imphal East district where he led a mass tree plantation pro gramme organised by the Forest Department.

Forest and climate change minister Thongam Biswajjt presided over the observance function.

In his address, Biren said that nothing is more precious than mother and motherland, for which people sacrifice their lives without any fear.

Led by this idea, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the innovative initiative of planting trees in the name of mother.

Every year, tree saplings were planted but could not attain much success.

However, this innovative approach will significantly increase the success rate of grooming the saplings as it will enhance the bonding to the plant for nurturing, he opined.

The chief minister also urged the people to plant at least one tree in the name of their mother and take care of it to counter the impacts of global climate changes.

While stressing the need to plant trees to survive as well as to counter the effects of global warming, he informed that mass plantation of trees at several places in Nongmaiching and Heibok Ching has already started in April.

"This year, we witnessed floods and hailstorms in several parts of the country, including Assam and Mizoram.

In Manipur too, we witnessed hailstorms and massive floods.

We need nature to survive but nature doesn't need us," remarked the chief minister, adding that MLAs and ministers are also campaigning for tree plantation in their respective constituencies.

Biren also assured that water supply scheme will be set up in every village and 11 football grounds of international standards will be developed in different parts of the state, out of which, one is being developed in Lamlai AC.

Speaking on the occasion, minister Biswajit confided that the Central government is targeting to plan 140 crore tree saplings under the campaign with the state government envisioning plantation of around 50 lakh saplings in the state, with a goal of planting at least 40 lakh saplings till September 2024.Van Mahotsav is being observed to spread awareness among the students, youth and masses to protect, conserve and preserve the forest, he said, while encouraging the public to plant more trees.

Fisheries minister Heikham Dingo, Hill Areas Committee chairman Dinganglung Gang-mei, MLAs, officials of forest department, students, and residents of Lamlai assembly constituency also attended the programme.
