Poster campaign on human skull recovery launched

Imphal, February 14 2015 : A poster campaign protesting the State Govern-ment's delay in initiating investigation into the recovery of human skulls and skeletal remains was launched by Families of Involuntary Disappeared Association of Manipur (FIDAM) in association with human Rights Initiative (HRI) in a simple function held at HRI office here on Saturday.

The State Govern-ment has intentionally delayed the investigation into the sensational human skulls recovery at the erstwhile Tombisana High School campus in Decem-ber last year, President of FIDAM K Ranjit lamented.

He said that FIDAM has a list of 24 people who have disappeared involuntarily and the organization has been insisting the State Government for a proper investigation into the recovery of human skulls and skeleton remains as the place from where these were recovered was used as the camp of security forces from time to time.

The poster campaign was launched to make the people aware of the delay in investigation by the State Government, Ranjit said while adding that the campaign would also be conducted in other districts of the state.

Stating that the launch of poster campaign was a part of the movement jointly organised by Committee on Mass Grave at Tombisana High School (COMGATS), he warned that FIDAM and HRI would launch a series of protest with the support of the women vendors of Ima Keithel in the near future.

He demanded that the State Government should speed up the investigation to find out the truth about the discovery of the human skulls and skeletal remains.

In December last year, eight human skulls and a number of skeleton remains were recovered during excavation at the campus of now defunct Tombisana High School located in the heart of Imphal city.

After the school remained in a defunct state, Central security forces like CRPF, BSF and state police commandos used to camp inside the campus for a long time.

Taking the matter seriously and on the pressure from various civil society organizations, the State Government has decided to hand over the probe of the discovery of human skulls to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The State Government has decided to hand over the case considering the sensitivity, complexity and technical issues to be involved in the investigation.

However, even after the decision was taken no further action was initiated to commence the investiga-tion, FIDAM President alleged.
