BJP questions Govt's position

Imphal, August 18 2014: BJP Manipur unit has questioned the State Government's position on the popular demand for enforcement of Inner Line Permit System in Manipur.

Speaking to media persons at their Nityaipat Chuthek office here today, BJP spokesman RK Shivchandra questioned the Government's inaction after the State Assembly adopted resolutions twice in favour of enforcing ILPS in the State.

Congress party should inform the public about its position on the ILPS issue.

Expressing surprise over Chief Minister O Ibobi's assertion that implementation of ILPS in Manipur was an important task as mentioned in his Independence Day speech, the BJP spokesman accused the Chief Minister of speaking something during public functions and something totally different during all political party meetings.

This indicated that the Congress party has not taken any clear cut position on the issue.

Quoting the Chief Minister's statement that the State Legislators have been working hard for enforcement of ILPS and all the 60 MLAs would resign if they were not working on the issue, Shivchandra questioned if all the opposition MLAs, in addition to the Congress MLAs, have agreed to resign.

Saying that the Government was not sincere on the ILPS issue, Shivchandra claimed that the Government of Assam has already produced a white a paper on the number of foreigners living in the State.

He then questioned the State Government's inability to produce a white paper on the number of illegal migrants who entered Manipur from Myanmar and Bangladesh through Moreh and Jiribam respectively.

Students' chanting for ILPS as the Chief Minister started delivering his speech during the Independence Day function did not look like they were instigated by some people.

It was the voice of deeply wounded hearts.

Denouncing the interruption of Independence Day celebration by students, the Deputy Chief Minister cautioned that the Centre would take advantage of the situation.

Quoting the Deputy Chief Minister's statement, Shivchandra asked the underlying message behind the particular statement.

Questioning the State Government's failure to enact a legislation for regulation of immigration, the BJP spokesman asked if the 15-member all parties committee has been frozen after its first meeting.

The committee should act promptly keeping in mind people's pulse and aspiration.

In case the all party committee believes in procrastination which would add fuel to the people's fury, BJP may be compelled to take a decision of its own, he added.
