The 28th annual conference of Lions Club International District 322 D christened Loktakcon 2007 was opened today at JNM Dance Academy.
The opening session of the two day conference was graced by Governor Dr SS Sidhu and Josline E Myrthong of Dishnet Wireless Ltd (North-East circle) as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Former international director of Lions Club AP Singh inaugurated the session.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sidhu appreciated service being rendered of Lions Club over the years.
The Lions Club International with an objective to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of the world, to promote the principles of good governance and good citizenship, to take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community have been serving over the years for promotion of welfare activities, the Governor remarked.
He took pride in the fact that Lions Clubs are now part of the world's premier community service organisation with 1.4 million members enrolled in 44,000 clubs in 192 countries across the globe.
The Governor also described Lions Club as dedicated to helping weaker sections of the society across the globe irrespective of language, religion or political systems.
The Lions around the world have been donating millions of dollars to local community and millions of hours of hands on service.
They have been dedicating themselves in eradicating preventable blindness, financing vocational training, helping underprivileged secure economic independence, sponsoring drug awareness and education programmes for youths around the world, he noted.
As a part of the inaugural function a souvenir was also released by Dr Sidhu.
He also gave away the Karmayogi Award 2006-07 instituted by the Club to Laishram Anandyaima of Heirok Part III.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 41,000, a citation and a shawl.
