CM underlines elected representatives' roles in 'Go to Village' mission

Imphal, April 10 2018: Chief Minister N.Biren Singh has said elected representatives of Panchayati Raj institutes of the State will be involved in the State Government's 'Go to the Village' mission.

He was speaking as the Chief Guest at the inauguration function of the Capacity Building Programme for elected women representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions of the State at the Sangai Hall of Hotel Imphal yesterday.

The programme was organised by National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRD & PR), Hyderabad with the assistance from State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Manipur under the aegis of National Commission for Women (NWC) .

.NBiren Singh said that capacity building would play an important part in creating awareness, imparting rights and facilities to the citizens regarding various rural development flagship programmes of the Government.

The Chief Minister expressed hope that the programme would help build sustainable capacities locally for the welfare of women in the State.

.NBiren said that he has been informed that the training modality requires initial training of 22 Master Trainers, who in turn would train a group of women elected representatives with a group of women elected representatives, with a group aggregate not exceeding 30 members in each case.

The Panchayat election was held in the State in October last year.

As such, the training programme has come in an appropriate time to sensitize the newly elected women representatives, namely 67 Pradhans, 787 Ward Members and 26 Zilla Parishad Members, the Chief Minister said. He said that building such awareness and capacities would help change societal attitudes towards women and bring about positive development on the status of women in the State.

Stating that SIRD has been doing good work in giving training to elected representatives, the Chief Minister said that he has been told that SIRD has conducted 522 training programmes for the elected representatives and official functionaries during 2017-18 financial year.

Speaking at the occasion as the president, RD & PR Minister Th.Biswajit said that women have been taking active role in different fields in the State.

It is a matter of pride that there is huge number of elected women representatives in Panchayati Raj institutions of the State.

As they need to be trained, the capacity building programme was held conducted under National Commission for Women Act, 1990, he said while adding that the training programme would make the women elected representatives aware about their rights and responsibilities.
