Imphal, April 07 2010: The World Health Day was observed in the state by various government and non-governmental organisations today.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) observed the Day with a function held at IMA complex with the Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ph Parijat as the chief guest.

President of IMA, Dr Kh Palin presided over the function.

Delivering his speech as chief guest, Minister Parijat appealed to the doctors who have retired from service on superannuation to serve the people on contract basis, considering the shortage of manpower in the healthcare centres of the state.

The healthcare centres run by the government are facing shortage of medical officers, and the state is lagging behind in healthcare delivery.

The government has decided to appoint medical officers on contract basis to make up the shortage, he said.

People of the state generally lack awareness on the healthcare measures.

Roads are still a place of health hazard, the Minister said stressing the need for a concerted effort of the government authority and people in taking up healthcare measures.

He also talked at length on the steps taken by the state health services for the improvement of healthcare delivery system across the state in both rural and urban areas.

IMA president and Managing Director of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Dr Kh Palin and several other renowned doctors spoke on the occasion.

The Manipur Voluntary Health Association, Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal observed the day at the hall of the association with MLA Dr I Ibohal as chief guest which was presided over the president of the association Y Surchandra.

Project Director (Technical) of Manipur AIDS Control Society, Kh Pramodkumar, regional director of Regional Health and Family Department, Dr N Inaoba, associate professor of Psychiatric Department of RIMS, Dr RK Lenin and Manipur State Consultant of UNICEF, Arun Meitram attended as guest of honour.

Speaking as chief guest of the function, MLA Ibohalbi stressed the need of health service authority to serve the people in the far flung areas and villages across the state observing that people of the far flung areas and villagers are shifting in nearby town and city areas as they could not avail the proper healthcare and other facilities in their places.

Under the Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS), Vision Foundation Manipur and Kangla Acupuncture jointly observed the day at Hotel Nirmala, Thangal Bazar with Dr Aribam Devdutta, an associate professor of RIMS as chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Devdutta said taking up developmental works in due course of time, giving mental as well as physical pressure to the people are increasing day by day.

In order to confront the increasing impact of development, there is the need of health awareness to everybody.
