IGAR (S) pledges peace to the Ningols

Imphal, October 31 2011: Seeking support of the masses in the endeavour of the Assam Rifles to restore law and order in the State, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) UK Gurung reaffirmed commitment of the Assam Rifles in bringing peace and prosperity to the State.

Addressing an impressive gathering of women folk from different communities at a belated celebration of Ningol Chakkouba festival hosted by IGAR (S) at Charduar Hall, Mantripukhri today, the Major general pledged to contribute all possible assistance in the development of the Manipuri society.

Conveying thanks for heartily accepting invitation to join the festive occasion, UK Gurung opined that celebration of the festival with the participation of various communities will not only strengthen bond of love and affection amongst the people but will go a long way in promoting unity, integrity and peaceful co-existence and prosperity in Manipur, which he described as 'paradise on earth' .

"This ningol Chakkouba is being organised for the sisters and daughters of this beautiful State as a heartfelt gesture of love and affection and to pay a befitting tribute to the Manipuri women whose outstanding qualities are renowned the world over," said the IGAR (S) .

While noting that Manipur is currently undergoing a transformation, he exuded confidence that the Manipuri women who have always been the torchbearers can contribute meaningfully towards bringing peace and tranquillity to the State.

Asserting that the Assam Rifles holds in high esteem any suggestion given by the women folk of the State, he reiterated his sincere appeal to all section of the society to convey positive and concrete suggestion for such comments encourage the Assam Rifles to serve the people with renewed vigour and commitment.

Highlighting uniqueness of the Ningol Chakkouba festival, Padmashree awardee Ksh Thouranisabi and former Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women ch Jamini explained the traditional essence and religious fervour of the festive occasion.

Thanking the IGAR (S) for remembering the State's womenfolk on such an auspicious occasion, they said Ningol Chakkouba reaffirms familial ties, strengthens bond of love and affection between brothers and sisters, and fathers and daughters.

They took pride that the festival, which used to be celebrated by only the Meiteis only, has transcended community or religious barriers at present.

While educationist Sawmi Woleng conveyed profound happiness for being a part of the celebration, Editor of Aja daily Valley Rose Hungyo narrated her personal experiences of taking part at numerous Ningol Chakkouba festivals.

Recounting that she faced posers as to why a non-Meitei had been taking part in the celebration, Valley Rose reportedly suggested that there should be no qualm in rejoicing at festive occasions of others for every culture and tradition is based on the basic principle of love, friendship and humanity.

Besides ordinary citizens and representatives of women organisations, the celebration was joined by female film personalities and award winning litterateurs, sportspersons and artisans.

As a tradition of the festival, gifts were presented to all the guests by the IGAR (S) and other top ranking AR officials.

The women groups also brought fruits and eatables in the same tradition in which Ningol Chakkouba is celebrated here in the State.
