Manipuri activist wins award

Manipuri activist Urmila Chanam ' s global campaign, 'Breaking the Silence' was adjudged the most powerful campaign in the country and won the National Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity.
She received the award in a ceremony held on March 20 at TATA Centre, NCPA, Mumbai.
Using technology, innovation and social media to question traditional norms that are harmful for girls and women worldwide, 'Breaking the Silence' stormed the National level awards for having reached close to 6000 adolescent girls and 80 school teachers in 2014 alone with training on menstrual hygiene, environment friendly disposal of used sanitary material and distribution of sanitary pads for free.
Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis was the chief guest of the award ceremony and the evening was studded with stars, actors, singers, authors among others.
Singer Suneeta Rao presented the award to Urmila Chanam along with Sharada AL, Director, Population First and SV Sista, Executive Trustee, Population First.
Urmila will launch 'Breaking the Silence' in four districts of Manipur and train hun-' dreds of girls in remote villages of the North East State.
Times of India had described her as'the Manipuri woman who busts myths around menstruation' last year in 2014.In Uganda, she is fondly called by the name 'Mama MHM (menstrual hygiene management) following her work there.
