State to have labs for testing fishes soon: Nasir

Amidst rising health concern on consumption of fishes imported from other States, Fisheries Minister Abdul Nasir has said that laboratories for testing fishes would be set up in the State shortly.
He was speaking in the State Legislative Assembly during the discussion for demand grant for Fisheries today.
The demand of Rs.31,68,01,000 for Fisheries was passed by the State Assembly today.
Five MLAs raised cut motions to the demand citing failure of the Fisheries Department to produce indigenous variety of fishes and allocate sufficient funds to fish farmers.
Clarifying to the MLAs, Minister Nasir said that there was no mechanism to test the imported fishes if they are hazardous for consumption or not.
However, the Department would soon set up laboratories for testing fishes and ensure safety and health of the general public.
Raising the cut motion, MLA Bishwajit stated that the authorities concerned should see if the fishes imported from other states are harmful for consumption or not.
MLA Joykishan suggested that a fish market should be established at Lamphel in view of expanding the fisheries.
Dr I Ibohalbi urged the Fisheries Minister to regularize 120 employees of the Department who attended the DPC in 1985 .
Meanwhile, a demand of Rs.21,58,36,000 for Administration of Justice was also passed by the State Assembly today.
