NIT holds 5th convocation ceremony

Imphal, December 21 2018: The 5th convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Manipur was held at its campus located at Takyel, Imphal West today.

Altogether 223 students were conferred degrees of various kinds, including PhD, MTech, MSc and BTech during the function.

The function was graced by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), GoI Vice Chairman Dr MP Poonia, BOG, NIT Manipur Chairperson Ashishkumar Chauhan and Padma Vibhushan and Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet Chairman Dr R Chidambaram as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Speaking at the function, Poonia asserted that NIT, Manipur nurtures its students to drive forward the boundaries of knowledge and aims to encourage intellectual curiosity in their graduates with the strong belief that a vigorous education system in the country can take the country ahead.

He said that the technical education system has witnessed an exponential growth during the last few decades facing vast range of challenges while conveying that AICTE is aiming to provide thrust to improve quality of technical education in the country.

Saying that globalization of the world economy and higher education are deriving profound changes in engineering education system, he pointed out that future engineering graduates not only needs to be knowledgeable in his/her own discipline, but also needs as new set of soft, professional skills and competencies.

He also informed that AICTE has taken up various measures to enhance quality of education system in line with the increasing needs of the engineering students.

Congratulating the students who received degrees today, the Vice Chairman noted that the said students are entering in the real world of work where modern, competitive economy needs young minds, who possess skills, knowledge and right attitudes.

Chidambaram contended that India's wish of economically developed, scientifically advanced, strong military, having improved Human Development Index, energy security, water security, food and nutritional security among others could be possible only when the country becomes a knowledge-driven economy.

Further opining that qualitative leaders in science and technology and other fields are much needed to grow the country into a knowledge-driven economy, he said the foundation for qualitative leadership has to be laid in institutions, like NIT, Manipur.
