Need for opening 'Culture Dept' in Manipur University mooted

Imphal, December 07 2014: Pointing out that Culture Department is yet to be opened in Manipur University despite the State being rich in culture, renowned film maker, Padmashri Aribam Shyam Sharma conceded that the State of Manipur is blessed with immense talent in the field of literature and art & culture.

He was attending Dynamic Manipur Inspiration Episode-5 function organized by Dynamic Manipur at Hotel Imphal, North AOC here today.

Shyam Sharma acknowledged that there are many adorable heritage sites in the State, while noting that development will not be flourished in the society where there is no heritage.

Expressing unhappiness over the absence of Culture Department in Manipur University, he asserted that it is utmost important to set up an institute where artistes could grasp the nuances of the rich culture of the State including Pena and Khongjom Parba.

Younger generation should take the responsibility to preserve the rich culture left by older people, he added.

Recalling that film makers in the past had faced lots of difficulties due to the lack of financial and logistic assistance, he said that several films produced in the State have won honorable international awards while some have screened in different foreign countries which is commendable.

The renowned film maker added that intense research should be done before producing a film on desire subject.

Film actress, Lin Laishram and award winning director, Oinam Doren also spoke on the occasion.

As part of the programme, cultural performances of 'Pung Cholom' and 'Leima Jagoi' were showcased.
