Man held with fake Remdesivir injections

Imphal, August 03 2021: A team of Imphal East district police arrested a man from Bihar with 441 fake Remdesivir injections on Monday.

The arrested man has been identified as Lalo Sah (55) son of late Bauku Sah of Sasam village in Samastipur district of Bihar but presently residing in a rented accommodation in Sangaiprou area.

In all, 441 fake Remdesivir injections used in treatment of Covid-19 positive patients were seized from him.

Parading him before media persons at his conference hall on Tuesday, Imphal East SP N Herojit said that a police team led by ASI Md Akhtar Hussain conducted normal patrolling and checking of commuters who were coming out in defiance of the curfew imposed for containing the spread of Covid-19.During the routine checking, Lalo came with two large bags and the team detained him for questioning.

Upon checking the two bags, a bag containing clothes and another containing medicines were detected.

The district police immediately contacted health services authority and inspected the medicines brought by Lalo.

According to health department's state drug controller, the seized medicines are suspected to be fake ones when compared to the medicine used in treatment of Covid patients and the medicines could not he procured and brought individually without the permission of authorities.

During interrogation, Lalo revealed that the medicines were handed over to him by a man in Guwahati and asked him to keep them for some time.

It was learnt that a man will come to take possession of the fake medicines from him after some days, the SP said, while informing that the police tracked the man who had given the fake medicines.

The prime suspect was in Guwahati till Monday but travelled to Kolkata on Tuesday.

A team of district police has been formed to nab him.

However, as the exact location of the man in question could not be identified, the team is lying in wait in Imphal for the time being, Herojit added.

A case has been registered against Lalo at Porompat PS and he was produced in the court of CJM Imphal East through video conferencing.

Consequently, Lalo has been remanded to police custody for eight days.
