Prices of essential commodities shoots up as blockade continues

Imphal, September 14 2011: With the economic blockade carried out by the SHDDC demanding a full fledged Sadar Hills district and the counter economic blockade by UNC in full swing, trucks ferrying in essential commodities in the state have stopped and the prices of essential items in the market has risen sky high.

After a survey of the Imphal market it has come to our knowledge that the prices of all essential commodities have shot up sky high.

The price of potatoes has gone up to Rs 45/kg, onions to Rs 60/kg.Lukhoi who runs grocery shop in Thangal bazaar said that since no goods have come in from other states with the enforcement of economic blockade, the price of goods have totally climbed up.

The price of a bag of potatoes which used to cost Rs 700 only is now Rs 1700 per bag.

The prices of different varieties of dal have also gone up considerably, kangtak is available at Rs 43/kg, Mangal Mapum at Rs 39/kg, Musori at Rs 48/kg, Sagolhawai at Rs 54/kg, Moong at Rs 58/kg Chana at Rs 52/kg and Badam at Rs 100/kg.He further said that edible oils, Tagore brand is available at Rs 1600/tin and Double Sher brand at Rs 1560/tin.But the price of rice though a little higher than before has not increased like other commodities.

Even though the price of all commodities has risen sky high the public have been taking it in their strides, they do not seem to complain as long as these commodities are available in the market, he said.
