Cleanliness drive, tree sapling plantation mark Gandhi Jayanti

Imphal, October 02 2021: As elsewhere in the country, the 152th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed by the state government at GM Hall here on Saturday.

As part of the observance, which is also held as National Cleanliness Day, Governor La Ganesan led the state in offering floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor La Ganesan stressed that in addition to promoting a clean environment as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi, We need to instill a clean way of thinking as well.

October 2 is alt o the Birth Anniversary of India's second Prime Minister Lai Bahadur Shastri, who is one of the best administrators in the country, he added.

The Governor then urged the people to get vaccinated so to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic, while further urging for continued cooperation with regard to activities taken up from time to time for containing Covid-19.The observance was also attended by Deputy CM Y Joykumar, ministers, MLAs, top civil and police officials.

"Gandhi Jayanti" observance held across the state on Saturday was marked by conduct of cleanliness drive and tree plantation programmes by various organisations and institutions.

Department of Youth Affairs and Sports observed Gandhi Jayanti by conducting a 'Cleanliness Drive' at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex area with the participation of YAS director T Phulen Singh, officials, staff and coaches while RIMS Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee and RIMS Students Union (RIMSSU) organised a 'Cleaning and Tree Plantation programme' to mark the celebration at RIMS.

Taking part at the event, RIMS director Prof A Santa Singh informed that the mass cleanliness programme will continue for a month.

The director and officials also planted tree saplings at the compound of Kushumlei Hostel (Ladies Hostel No 3).The Cleanliness and Tree Plantation programme was also participated by faculty members and officials, staff of Manipur Security Services and CRED.

Similarly, NSS-Cell, Manipur University along with NSS Unit-I and NSS Unit-II, MU observed the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the varsity's campus.

Around 100 NSS volunteers from the two units participated in the cleanliness programme and also visited the old temple situated atop the hill of Canchipur palace and interacted with the resource persons.

Volunteers also took the pledge of 'Swacchata' and conducted on spot extempore competition on the topic 'Be the change you want to see in the world-by MK Gandhi'.

On the other hand, district administration of Senapati led by DC Mahesh Chaudhari observed the National Cleanliness Day on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Saturday.

The observance was marked by conduct of cleanliness drive in and around government offices and Senapati town area by all sections of people.

It may be also mentioned that Nehru Yuva Kendra, Senapati began 'Clean India' programme, a day before, as part of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava and it will continue for one month.

The programme was launched by Autonomous District Council, Senapati former executive member Benjamin Tao at the District HQ.

The programme activities include Plog Run, collection and disposal of waste, village beautincation, cleanliness and maintenance of traditional water sources and it is being participated by 150 youths.

Similarly, district administration of Bishnupur along with various departments in the district observed National Cleanliness Day in their respective office premises on Saturday.

The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was also observed by 44 Assam Rifles of 22 Sector IGAR (East) during which unit jawans planted 3500 saplings of Hibiscus, Amla and other local plants in various parts of the district.

Nehru Yuva Kendra, Thoubal organised a Clean India cum Fit India Plog Run at District Hospital Thoubal in collaboration with District Health Society Thoubal, NSS Waikhom Mani College Thoubal, NSS YK College Thoubal and NCC Khagabok Hr Secondary School Thoubal.

A total of 150 volunteers of NYKS, NSS & NCC, police personnel and medical staff and workers of Thoubal district took part in the Cleanliness Drive.

The collected wastes especially single-use plastic wastes were handed over to Thoubal Municipal Council for disposal.

A total of 100 kg of waste were collected on the site.

A Clean India Swachhta Pledge was also taken with the participants after the social service programme attended by District Hospital medical superintendent Dr Ch Memcha Devi, National Health Mission district programme manager Ch Basanta Singh, NYK Thoubal youth officer Michael T Mate, Waikhom Mani Girls College NSS PO Asst Prof P Robinson Singh, YK College Thoubal NSS PO Asst Prof L Sanahal Singh and Khangabok Higher Secondary School Thoubal NCC officer Chaosana Singh.

Manipur Apex Marketing Cooperative Society (MAMCS) Limited, Imphal observed Lamyanba Hijam Irabot's 125th Birth Anniversary and 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi along with shop owners of the society at Chingmeirong.

Gandhi Jayanti was also observed in Kakching district and by Manipureli Kirat Sangh and Bir Tikendrajit University, Canchipur.
