CPI bandh evokes mixed response

The 12-hour statewide strike by Manipur Communist Party of India (CPI) evoked mixed response on Friday as it ended peacefully.
Manipur state CPI unit observed the general strike from 5 am to 5 pm after its workers were injured in police action yesterday when the party tried to take out a rally here in protest against price hike and a wide range of issues like the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 confronting the state.
Educational institutions and other establishments were remained shut during the course of the bandh.
However, quite a lot of vehicles could be seen moving in the streets in the city.
Unpleasant incidents were not reported during the strike that ended at 5 pm.

Manipur CPI announced the Manipur bandh following the police detained several workers of the party here on Thursday as they tried to storm the state assembly now in session.
Hundreds of CPI Manipur State Council workers organised a rally under the banner 'June Struggle' against the state Congress Government, but a large number of police foiled it and detained several workers as the protest aimed to storm the assembly, according to a police report.
The police used tear gas shells to quell them as they were organizing the rally in front of the party office in the heart of the city.
The rally led by CPI MLA Mangi took out from the party office, but it was stopped by the police midway at the foot of the Flyover here.
The police resorted to tear gas canister firing to disperse them.
The police then picked up several party workers from the site however they were later freed after detaining them for several hours.
