Manipuri artist wins Lalit Kala Akademi Award

Imphal, September 28 2026: Renowned artist Sarungbam Nimai Singh has been selected for the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi Award.

His teak wood sculpture titled 'Mudra-1' was selected among 20 awardees across India for the 65th National Exhibition of Art organised by Lalit Kala Akademi, National Academy of Art.

This year, 6,175 artworks by 2,497 artists were received.

After first-tier jury screening, 270 artworks including paintings, sculptures, printmaking and mixed media were shortlisted for the exhibition.

A second-tier jury then selected 20 works for the award.

Nimai Singh is son of late Sarungbam Tombi Singh and Sarungbam Ongbi Mema Devi of Yumnam Leikai, Imphal.

A BFA Gold Medalist and MFA in Sculpture from BHU, Varanasi, he is a recipient of Junior Fellowship from Ministry of Culture and Manipur State Kala Akademi Award and former Principal of Imphal Art College.
