Works on historic Tongjil Maril begins

Imphal, September 08 2014: Construction works of 50.40 km-long Bishnupur-Tupul road under centrally sponsored scheme of North Eastern State Roads Investment Programme (NESRIP) and 69.52 kms Zoujangtek-Rengpang road under the sponsorship of North Eastern Council (NEC) were inaugurated simultaneously by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today.

These two stretches of the road are part of the historic Tongjil Maril route that passes through Bishnupur and Tamenglong districts.

The work for construction of Bishnupur-Tupul road at an estimated cost of Rs 114 crores has been entrusted to the Delhi based company DRAIPL and the ABCI Company based in Guwahati.

The road will be constructed in Intermediate Double Lane (IDC) form with 3 meters in width and drain on both sides of the road will measure 8.7 meters each.

As for Zoujangtek-Rengpang road, Keystone Infra Private Limited, a company based in Hyderabad has been entrusted with the work which is estimated to cost Rs 92.25 crores.

Three bridges at Thongjaorok, Leimatak and Irang which passed through the road will also be constructed simultaneously.

During the inaugural function which was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam; Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar; Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam; IFC Minister Ngamthang Haokip; Chief Engineer of PWD; Principal Secretary (Works) Ram Muivah and other officials of PWD, Chief Minister O Ibobi said that the government's plan to connect the Bishnupur district with other districts will be materialized after the completion of the Bishnupyr-Tupul road stretch which will take three years.

However, construction work along the 19.2 kms stretch Bishnupur-Zoujangtek road will be completed within the current fiscal year.

Stating that role of roads and bridges in developing a society is pivotal as it will facilitate transportation including transaction of business, the Chief Minister appealed to all concerned organizations not to cause impediments in the construction of the roads.

The Chief Minister noted that development works whether it is the construction of road or bridges in different parts of the State has been hampered by subversive activities from outlawed organizations like abduction of workers for monetary demand.

So, people should join hands together and ensure that there are no disturbances to any kind of development works taken up by the government.

Speaking on sidelines of the inaugural function of Zoujangtek-Rengpang at Zoujangtek, Ibobi pointed out that the normal time taken of 7-8 hours while traveling from Tamenglong district headquarters to Imphal will be reduced by 1-2 hours after the completion of the road and maintained that to connect hills and valley by constructing proper roads and bridges is the top priority of the government.

The CM expressed unhappiness over the rumors spread by some vested individuals that the government is planning to acquire huge area of land in hills region by implementing Land Use Policy in hill districts which is not true at all.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also spoke on the occasion, sought the cooperation from everyone in the road improvement works of the National Highway 150-A and appealed to all to refrain from acts like kidnapping of workers belonging to the construction company.
