Opposition parties to raise drug issue in Parliament

Imphal, February 25 2013: Expressing serious concern over the recent spate of drug hauls in Manipur, Opposition political parties in the State have decided to bring up the issue in the ongoing Parliament session.

Addressing media persons on behalf of other Opposition parties at the office of MPP here today, Dr Nara, State Secretary, CPI, observed that Manipur has become a land without any true leader.

The ruling Congress-led State Government has not even disclosed the identities of the owners of various drug consignments seized by the police and so one is not sure whether Colonel Ajay Chowdhry, PRO, Defence Wing, Imphal who was caught with drugs worth Rs 15 crores red-handed would ever be punished under the laws of the land or not, Dr Nara said.

He pointed out that there is the need of a social democratic revolution in the State.

Corruption has begun to take deep roots in the State which is not a good sign at all.

N Sobhakiran, President of MPP was also present and spoke to the media.

Meanwhile, taking serious note over the involvement of an Army Colonel in drug smuggling case, Opposition MLA Dr I Ibohalbi has exclaimed that Army personnel are not here to safeguard the State but to carry out illegal business.

Addressing media persons at his official residence at Babupara here today, Dr I Ibohalbi stated that Manipur is being engulfed by various drug scandals of late.

Owners of huge drug hauls from the Imphal Airport and Mantripukhri recently have not been disclosed till today even though fingers have been pointing to some well known leaders of the State.

The involvement of Colonel Ajay Choudhary, PRO, Defense Wing in the 15 crores drug seizure at Pallel yesterday has clearly indicated that Manipur has become a big place for carrying out drug smuggling by Army officials.

So, it has become quite necessary to check all vehicles plying along Imphal-Moreh road with exception to that of the Chief Minister and the Governor.

He also demanded that the case be handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau and OC Sudhir of Thoubal Police, who succeeded in removing the mask from the face of Indian Army in Manipur, be conferred gallantry award.
