Tamenglong, September 21 2010: The long awaited Dailong Micro- Hydel project was finally inaugurated yesterday with LP Gonmei, IAS Principal Secretary (Power), Govt of Manipur, H Imocha Singh IAS, Commissioner (Science & Technology) Govt of Manipur and member secretary of MASTEC and K Panmei IAS Deputy Commissioner Tamenglong as chief guest, President and guest of honour respectively.

Dailong village is located 12 kilometres from District HQs under Tamenglong police station.

The plant has two turbines with each turbine producing 50 KV power each.

Dailong village has 239 total households, and at present the village consumes some 20 KV power daily.

Chief guest, LP Gonmei IAS, said that the commissioning of the plant was a dream come true.

LP Gonmei IAS urged of Dailong residents to utilize the power conservatively.

He said women folk could now weave cloth even at night.

Dailong village has been able to produce its own electricity because its big forest that was preserved over many years as a result of which water is available in plenty.

This should be model to all surrounding villages, he said.

The Secretary said he is preparing a documentary on preservation of forests, rivers for electricity, and he sought the full cooperation of the people.

'It is a red letter day for Tamenglong and particularly for Manipur, as the first ever Micro- Hydel Project has been implemented with great success.

Dailong village can advance using this uninterrupted power supply', K Panmei, IAS Deputy Tamenglong said while addressing the gathering.

Thingujam Surendranath, Executive Director, Manipur Science & Technology Council said Dailong Micro Hydel Project was sanctioned by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India under a technology demonstration programme for popularising the indigenous cross flow turbine designed by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

The project was sanctioned in November 1998 and actual implementation was started in March 2000 on a turnkey basis by MS Matronics India Ltd.

Left incomplete, it was revived during the tenure of Thaithuilung Pamei, IAS, as Deputy Commissioner Tamenglong.

Since then Manipur Science & Technology Council, MASTEC took over the works in consultation with the state power department, MS Jalshakti Engineer Kolkata, DRDA Tamenglong and Dailong Ecological & Environment Preservation Society under Dailong Village Authority adding that the project cost more than one lac.

Traditional dance and musical concert were the extravaganza in the evening in a cultural programme that ensued the inauguration ceremony.
