Purul has electricity but lacks other amenities

Imphal, November 14 2011: Though the condition of roads is one of the worst in the state, the people of Purul Akutpa village under Senapati district is quite peacefully enjoying sufficient power supply provided to them by the government during the night.

Purul Akutpa is a village under Karong a/c, 23 kms along the eastern side of Maram Bazar, with an eye catching picturesque.

The village is mainly inhibited by Paomei tribe with a population of around 7000 .

LS Thoi, Village Chairman of Purul Akutpa, speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao said that although there is no power supply during the greater part of day time, the village gets uninterrupted power supply from 4 pm till 4 am the next morning.

As a result of which the villagers need not spend any extra money on kerosene.

There is only one health centre in the village and the doctor who is supposed to be on duty is seldom present, informed the Village Chairman.

Forcing the villagers to travel all the way to Senapati or Imphal to get treated when the need for medical care arises.

He further went on to say that the village produces a whole lot of seasonal vegetables and fruits.

Since there are no big markets in the village, the produce of the village have to be transported to Senapati or to Nagaland.

The problem here is that the fare is very high and they hardly get any profit by selling their goods at these places.

The main occupation of the villagers is farming although a handful of them are employed in govt departments.

Coming down to educational facilities available in the village, he said that one can study right from the UJB level to the Higher Secondary level.

If one wishes to pursue his/her studies beyond higher secondary level they generally go to institutions either in Maram, Senapati or Imphal.

Sharing the problem faced by the people of the village regarding the MGNREGS, he said that even though there is an SDO, DDO and CDPO in the village they seldom come to their office.

As such the people have to go down to Imphal even for the submission of forms for MGNREGS.

The villagers as such are facing a really hard time.

Locals of the village said that people from within the state and outside the state often visits Khoide Khunkha where the Barak river touches the village and runs off.

Not less than 10 vehicles fully loaded with people come and visits the place.

Taking this inflow of tourist, the government should establish a tourist rest house in the area.
