Yangoubung villagers unaware of Govt's food security system

Kakching, December 02, 2014: The villagers of Yangoubung Village, which is lying close to Indo-Myanmar border, are totally unaware of the Central Government's food security scheme like Public Distribution System (PDS).

Yangoubung Village, inhabited by the Kuki tribes, is located at about 35 kilometers to the south-west of Moreh town along the Indo-Myanmar Border Pillar No.72 in Chandel district.

Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Chief of Yangoubung Village Tongkholan (Palal) Guite said that Yangoubung was so called because of its abundance in a tree called "Yangou".

The village came into existence somewhere in the year 1969, and later it was recognized by the Government of Manipur in 1974 .

The village has around 65 households with a population of about 450 .

Myanmar's Lalim Village is just four kilometres away to the south-east of the village.

The villagers of Yangoubung often face problems due to deplorable roads.

The Border Road Task Force (BRTF) has begun developing roads passing through T Minou and B Shangreng since the last four years.

However, there is not much progress in the road development work.

The villagers have to travel to Tumu town in Myanmar for medical treatment in absence of proper road and transport facilities on the Indian side, the Chief said.

Notably, pregnant women in the village are given routine immunization from time to time under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

Most of the villagers are engaged in agriculture, logging and also in the works of BRTF.

The economic condition of the villagers has been raised to some extent with the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Act (MGNREGA).

In terms of education, the village has only one primary school under the Autonomous District Council (ADC), Chandel.

Presently, the school has 35 students up to Class V.Most of the villagers send off their wards to Moreh town for higher education.

Yangoubung is currently a non-electrified village.

The villagers are using solar system procured from Moreh town for lighting their homes.

However, the work of electrification in the village is in good progress.

The villagers are hopeful of getting electricity very soon, the Chief said.

Tongkholan further appealed to the State Government to take up proper measures to enhance road, transport, healthcare, education and other facilities in the village besides implementing all sorts of government schemes, especially PDS which provides highly subsidized food grains to the BPL and APL families.
