CM chairs meet on holistic development of Loktak Lake
Declaring Loktak Day a State Fest discussed

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand today chaired a key meeting on the holistic development and conservation of Loktak Lake at the conference hall of the Chief Minister's Secretariat, today.
According to well-placed sources, the meeting deliberated on measures to conserve Loktak Lake in Bishnupur and Phumlenpat in Kakching.
Loktak is a designated Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and has been placed on the Montreux Record due to ecological changes and environmental pressures.

The meeting also discussed promoting Loktak Day as a State festival to spread awareness about the importance of conserving the largest freshwater lake in the North East.
Measures to regularly monitor the water quality of the lake, provide sustainable livelihood opportunities to people living in adjoining areas, check increasing siltation and address deforestation and environmental degradation in the catchment areas were also discussed.
The meeting further deliberated on cleaning streams flowing into Loktak Lake along their courses, monitoring the increasing growth of biomass (phumdis) in the lake, addressing environmental degradation and promoting Loktak as a tourist destination without compromising its ecology.
Stating that Loktak Day is observed to promote conservation of the lake, the meeting considered upgrading the event to a State festival.
Art and Culture and Tourism Minister Kh Loken, MLAs Th Basanta Kumar, Th Shanti, K Robindro, T Robindro, Irengbam Nalini, S Premchandra and Dr Usham Deben were present at the meeting, according to a social media post shared by the Chief Minister.
The meeting was also attended by Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, Loktak Development Authority Chairman Arun Kumar Sinha, LDA Project Director Heisnam Balkrisna and other senior officials.
The meeting also deliberated on matters related to the sustainable development and protection of Loktak Lake and the proposed amendment to the Manipur Loktak Lake (Protection) Act, 2006 .
