Students rally demands halt of Sangai Fest

A day after large number of students under the aegis of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) Students' Wing tried to storm the Chief Minister Bungalow in pursuance of its demand for immediate implementation of ILPS in the State, students of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary Academy, Nongmeibung took out a protest rally and attempted to storm Hapta Kangjeibung, the venue of Sangai Festival today demanding halt of the festival which starts from tomorrow.
The rally started from campus of the school and marched towards the venue of the festival during which the student protesters chanted slogans such as 'Implement ILPS in the State', 'We want ILPS', 'Save indigenous people' etc.

Security personnel deployed nearby the school tried to stop them but the protesters forcibly marched ahead.
When the student protesters who were large in number reached Kusum Oil Pump, a team of Manipur police commando stopped them from moving further.
Annoyed at the attempt of the commando force, the enraged protesters lied on the street, blocking vehicular movement along the Wangkhei-Kongba road.
After a while, additional forces belonging to Imphal East Police came in and dispersed the protesters.
Unable to proceed further, the students retreated back to the school campus.
The situation suddenly heightened when the student protesters attacked the security personnel with catapult and stone.
In retaliation, the security team resorted to firing tear gas shells towards the school campus.
In the action, three girl students of the school fainted on the ground.
Later, they were admitted to JNIMS Hospital for treatment.
A police commando also suffered injuries on his chest after he was hit by a stone pelted by the protesters.
Nearly after one-hour of slugfest between the security forces and the student protesters, the situation finally came to ease.
Additional SP of Imphal East, Hussein Jaman also arrived at the spot and enquired the incident.
