Govt should not break existing SHGs for political gain: Cooperative president

Imphal, September 28 2026: President of Kaifadaba Lan Women Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd, Sagolmang, N Bimota has urged the Government not to break existing Self Help Groups (SHGs) for political mileage and to channel the Rs 10,000 assistance for women through recognised SHGs under the Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission.

She was speaking at the 5th General Body Meeting of the society held today at the Community Hall, Sagolmang Bazaar, Imphal East.

The meeting was attended by a large number of members of different Village Level Federations (VLFs) and SHGs under the society, along with State Mission Manager M&E, MIS, IBCB of MSRLM Gurumayum Kavita, District Mission Manager of MSRLM Imphal East Naoshram Basanta and others.

Bimota said the Government's announcement to provide Rs 10,000 to women through SHGs should be implemented through SHGs already recognised by the MSRLM.

She alleged that there are reports of some individuals arranging funds on their own to distribute and forming new SHGs in large numbers for availing the financial assistance.

This has put existing SHGs in a position of being affected and has disturbed the existing SHG ecosystem, she said.

Highlighting the activities of the cooperative, Bimota said there are 23 VLFs under the society covering 55 localities, working for the economic upliftment of women.

The society has been continuously facilitating loans to women through various banks, she said, adding that SHGs play a major role in poverty alleviation.
