Trade Unions' general strike comes into effect

Imphal, February 27 2012: In response to the 12-hour nation-wide general strike being called by the Central Trade Unions from 6 am to 6 pm tomorrow, as many as 75 trade unions, associations and federations in Manipur under the joint banner of Co-ordinating Body of Trade Unions, Manipur have announced their support to the strike.

The nation-wide general strike is being called jointly by Central trade unions namely BMS, INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, AICCTU, UTUC, TUCC, LPF and SEWA, in pursuance of a 10-point charter of demands including protest against rising prices, disinvestment of profit-making PSUs and violation of labour.

The 75 trade unions, associations and federations in Manipur which have announced their support to the strike are All Manipur Shops and Establishment Employees' Union, All Manipur Muthiya Workers' Union, All Manipur Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, All Manipur Construction Workers' Union, All Manipur Constuction Workers' Welfare Union, All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union, All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers and Pullers' Welfare Union, Khwairamband Keithel Nupi Vendors' Welfare Union, All Manipur PHED Employees' Association, All Manipur Mistry Workers' Union, All Manipur Sunday Market Vendors and Labourers' Union, All Manipur Roadside Vendors Association (Khwairamband Keithel), All Manipur Agricultural Workers' Union, All Manipur Home Guard Employees' Union, All Manipur Petroleum Tankers' Welfare Union, All Manipur Newspaper Sales and Distributors' Union, All Manipur Social and Child Labour Functionary Union, All Manipur Bank Employees' Association, All Manipur Government Employees' Association, All Manipur Secondary Teachers' Welfare Association, All India Working Women Forum (Manipur), All Manipur Nupi Marup, Electricity Employees' Union, Loktak Area Fisheries Union, Indo-Burma Road Drivers' Union, ASHA Workers' Union, All Manipur Nagera Union, All India Students' Federation( Manipur), All India Youth Federation (Manipur), All anipur Labour Market Union, Street Vendors' Union (Khuman Lampak), Street Vendors (New Checkon), Dolaithabi Dam Workers' Union, NHPC Loktak Workers Union, BSNL (SUP) Dam Employees' Union, All Manipur Airtel Workers and Employees' Union, All Manipur Cable Networkers and Employees' Union, All Manipur Barbers' Union, Himalayan Tiles and Marble Workers' Union, All Moirangpurel Labour Association, Tronglaobi Area Rickshaw Drivers and Pullers' Union, Thongjaorok Quarry Women Vendors' Union, Nambol Bazar Women Vendors' Union, Khajiri Maning Women Workers' Union, Phoijing Chingning Nupi Loumi Shinmi Lup, Mayang Imphal Agricultural Workers' Union, Leimakhong Riverbed Women Quarry Labour Union, BSH Agri Employees' Union, Cluster Type of Training cum Production Cebntre and Employees' Union, Itham Quarry Workers' Union, Khurai Ahongei Weavers' Welfare Union, Khurai Chingangbam Leikai Young Workers' Union, Khurai Laishram Leikai Shinmi Lup, Khurai Nandeibam Leikai Shinmi Lup, Khurai Ningthoubung Leikai Carpentry Workers' Union, Kongpal Chingangbam Leikai Construction Workers' Union, Kongpal Khaidem Leikai Weavers' Union, Wapokpi Mamang Leikai Chaokhat Thourang Lup, Manipur Pollution Control Board Employees' Association, Thoubal District Veterinary Attendents' Union, Nongmaijing Chingning Stone Workers' Union, Keirao Awang Women Weavers Union, Patsoi JP Silk Reeling Women Workers and Labourers' Union, Yurembam Apunba Silk Reeling Women Workers' Union, Imphal East Zone-II Cooks' Association, New Checkon Chandi Workers' Union, Veterinary Employees' Union, Cooks Welfare Association, Airport Ground Control Workers' Union, Beaten Rice Workers' Welfare Association, Patsoi Area Brickfield Workers' Union, Bharat Pensioner Samaj (Manipur) and LIC Employees' Association (Silchar Division) .

Meanwhile, observing that the issues being raised by trade unions are common to the entire working class of our country, the National Confederation of Bank Employees INCBE), Manipur State Unit has also decided to join the general strike to fight against the power to be for the emancipation of the downtrodden and fulfillment of the workers' unity.

Consequently, all the public sector banks, private banks, rural banks, co-operative banks including State Bank of India in the state would remain close tomorrow, General Secretary of NCBE (Manipur State Unit) H Kishwarjit Singh informed in a statement.
