Philatelic exhibition begins

Imphal, February 06 2014: The 2nd District Level Philatelic Exhibition organised by Manipur Postal Division, Imphal commenced from today at Imphal Head Post Office complex with Free Lance Consultant and Senior Philatelist Dr Leban Serto, Manipur Postal Services Director T Mangmin Thang and Medical Officer of Health Services and Philatelist Dr RK Kapan as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively of the inauguration programme.

Stamps of 11 collectors are being put on display at the exhibition, the first edition of which was held in 2011, as an initiative of the Postal Division to encourage local stamp collectors/philatelists.

speaking at the occasion, RK Kapan expressing hope that the exhibition will spur fresh interest on stamp collection among the younger generation asserted that the event will dispel misconception about stamp collection being a wasteful indulgence in the modern age of technological advancement.

Conceding that stamp collection is a time consuming activity, he nevertheless highlighted that one would have inert satisfaction by becoming a philatelist.

Describing stamp collection as an art along with proposing that such an exhibition be organised annually, Dr Leban Serto in his address said through passionate involvement in stamp collection activities one could enhance knowledge on diverse subjects as well as have the zeal for wider information on prominent individuals, politics, geography, history, etc.

Delivering the presidential address, T Mangmin Thang conveyed to the gathering that the Central Government would soon be launching many new stamps.

Informing that the exhibition would remain open till 7 pm to enable to the general public, particularly office-goers and students, take a glimpse of the stamps, he also announced that ATM facility would be installed at the Imphal head post office on February 18 .

Upto December 2013 the head post office has been able to disburse NREGS wages amounting to Rs 10 crore, said the Director noting that existence of Indian Postal service for over 250 years indicates that inspite of modern technology Postal Service continues to be reliable for the common people.

While 54 post offices spread across the State have been computerised postal services requirement of the people are being handled by 700 branches and 2000 personnel, Mangmin Thang added.
