Tobacco products worth about Rs 21 lakhs were set aflame by the Singjamei unit of the Coalition Against Drug and Alcohol (CADA) here at Singjamei Khetri Leikai Hindi High school ground on Thursday at about 1:30 pm.
The tobacco items consisting of zarda, talab, khaini, raja, etc., brought in a truck bearing registration No MN04/A/1188 reportedly belonged to one Abash Khan of Lilong.
The truck was coming from Guwahati side carrying some mobile tower goods along with the tobacco products when it was nabbed by the Singjamei unit of CADA at about 11:30 am at Singjamei on Thursday.
The owner of the truck has been identified as Sahid Khan s/o Sulena of Lilong Khunou.
It may be mentioned here that the All Manipur Anti Drugs Association, AMADA, and CADA have been playing a great role in Manipur to do away intoxicants from the face of the state.
The associations have banned all types of intoxicants in the state and even taken out different drives to ban them.
It is also interesting to note here that an underground outfit of the State namely Revolutionary Peoples' Front, commonly known as RPF, has also joint in the ban of the use of any form of intoxicants in the state.
Due to the bans, it may be noted here too that discreet selling of intoxicants in the state have shot up their prices.
A pan costs as much as Rs 10 per piece and the price of khaini has gone up from Rs100 to Rs 200 per packet.
