Ukhrul, July 23 2024:
Alleging harassment of local residents by the 8th Assam Rifles stationed at Nampisha Outpost, Nampisha (Ramphoi), Kamjong Sub-Division, the Kamjong Katamnao Long (KKL) has submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner of Kamjong seeking immediate intervention to avert such incidents.
On July 20, at least nine local residents of Kamjong Headquarters were reportedly harassed by personnel of 8th Assam Rifles at Nampisha Outpost as they were returning after partaking in an unsuccessful search and rescue mission for the body of a man who drowned in Maklang River on July 19 .
KKL claimed that the 8th Assam Rifles created "unnecessary trouble" even though the youths made repeated appeals to allow them to cross the checkpoint after explaining the matter in detail.
However the AR personnel "detained them unnecessarily and meted out undue harassment by taking pictures with their mobile handset" and forced them to line up to search their vehicle, KKL said.
By this time, the youths were physically exhausted, hungry and drenched in rain water after a day-long search for the body of the drowned man.
The Assam Rifles who famously claim to be "Friends of The Hill People," treated the innocent local civilians like criminals or outlaws, alleged KKL.
Taking serious note of the indifferent attitude of AR towards civilians, KKL has termed the demeanor of the jawans as "unprofessional" and a big threat to the peace loving citizens.
It added that KKL will be compelled to boycott the Assam Rifles in their areas and report the matter to higher authorities at the Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi if such conduct continues unrectified.
