Awareness prog held ahead of International Biodiversity Day

Kangpokpi, May 21 2019: In connection with the observation of International Day for Biological Diversity, a one day awareness programme was conducted at Saheibung under Kangpokpi district today.

The programme was organised by Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) in collaboration with SEEDS and villagers of Saheibung, under the aegis of Directorate of Environment and under the UN's theme "Our Biodiversity Our Food Our Health".

Deputy Director, Directorate of Environment, Dr T Brajakumar, Saheibung village chief Athang Haokip, EGM president Khogendra Khomdram, All Manipur Working Journalists' Union president Bijoy Kakchingtabam and SEEDS president A Mobi, attended the programme as presidium members.

Speaking at the event, Brajakumar said that the world is developing at a fast pace.

However human beings are not able to invent technologies that can replace the two valuable elements of the planet namely water and air.

Humans, knowingly and unknowingly, destroy nature by cutting down trees, hunting animals and birds and exploiting resources which in turn damages the natural cycle of the ecosystem.

Taking serious note of the biodiversity and the ecosystem, the United Nations de cided to observe May 22 as the International Day for Biodiversity, he added.

Dr Brajakumar then urged all to maintain and preserve the trees grown in and around the surrounding areas of the village.

Saheibung village chief Athang Haokip said that when SEEDS and EGM began searching for land, there were some apprehension among the people.

However, the problem was properly resolved after it was made aware that the land would be utilised for developmental purposes, he added.

He continued that the villagers lack vision but still they wish for the village to be developed into a model village.

A PHSC is of utmost importance at the moment, he said.

SEEDS president Mobi said that necessary steps have been initiated at the village to set up a historical park and conserve the nature for the long run.

He further explained that the initiative is not aimed at profit but still it is being discussed as to the possibility of taking some form of funds or money from visitors, for use in maintenance.

He also assured that SEEDS and EGM will provided every possible assistance in the development of the village.

Meanwhile, Manipur Biodiversity Board, Forest Head Office, Sanjenthong Imphal and DFO Jiribam organised International Biodiversity Day at Jiribam Model High School hall today.
