Rickshaw drivers observe Black Day: Puya Mei Thaba Observance

Imphal, January 04 2012: As a part of the fortnight-long Black Day observance in commemoration of 283rd anniversary of Puya Mei Thaba (burning of sacred Puyas) being organised by International Observation Committee on Puya Mei Thaba, rickshaw drivers in the state today to wear black badges.

The main observance function was held at the office of All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers' and Pullers' Welfare Association at Sanjenthong.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Convener of the International Observation Committee on Puya Mei Thaba, Salam Chingtam Luwang said that not only religious and cultural traditions were recorded in the Puyas but also the historical events and civilisations of the then Kangleipak.

But all these sacred Puyas were burnt during the reign of King Pamheiba at the behest of Santidas Gosai.

Burning of these historical records and ancient scriptures is one of the most condemnable crimes against humanity and human civilisation.

Settlements of various communities in the state were also recorded in the Puyas.

Although many of these Puyas have been burnt, many were also saved by the then patriots of Kangleipak and they are lying scattered at different places of the state in the custody of many individuals.

Only when the people of different communities know the truth of their settlement and their loving relationship among each other, peace and unity will prevail in the state, he said.

Now, people have realised the truth and origin of the people of the state.

In the whole North East India ours is the only ethnic group which has its own religion, language and scripts, Chingtam added.

Writer Ranjit Ningthouja also attended the function as resource person.

Black Day was also observed in the office building of Divine Light, Canchipur with Project Director of Divine Light Romen Sharma, Salam Chingtam Luwang and Ranjit Ningthouja as presidium members.

In continuation of the fortnight-long observance, similar functions will be held at the office of Transporters and Drivers Council, MG Avenue and Khwairamband Ima Keithel tomorrow as well as at KRIPA Society, Sega Road and SAI Complex, Takyel on January 6 and MNP+,Yaiskul and Film Forum Manipur, Lamphel on January 7 .

Meanwhile, students and teachers of AIMS Higher Secondary School, Khongman; Cambridge Higher Secondary School, Khergao; Pioneer Academy, Palace Compound; Royal Academy of Science, Wangkhei; Holy English School, Soibam Leikai; Sacred Heart English School, Porompat; Friendship Educational Academy, Khurai; Leisemba Maheikol Kangla, Chingarel; Emmanuel English School, Yaingangpokpi; Success School, Salan Thongkhong and Shining School, Pangei observed Black Day today by wearing black badges.
