Imphal, June 27 2013:
The students' wing of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System said that a number of students today marched to Manipur Legislative Assembly in protest against the failure of the State Government to inform public about the status of its efforts towards implementing Inner Line Permit System in Manipur even as the State Assembly has adopted resolutions more than once in favour of implementing ILPS in Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at AMSU head-office, DM College campus this afternoon, convenor of the students' wing Moirangthem Angamba said that the State Assembly adopted a resolution in favour of enforcing ILPS in Manipur on July 13 last year and a copy of the resolution was dispatched to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
The State Assembly adopted a similar resolution on June 13 this year.
Even though people are anxious to know the status of Government efforts towards implementing ILPS in Manipur, it appears that the State Government has not initiated any follow-up measures after adopting a resolution in the State Assembly, Angamba decried.
There is no point reaffirming the same resolution 100 times, if the State Government is not sincere enough.
He said that all political parties need to take a definite stand on the issue and support the mass movement for implementation of ILPS in Manipur.
The convenor condemned in the strongest term police action of chasing and baton-charging students who marched up to State Assembly to lodge their protest against lack of progress in the Government's efforts to enforce ILPS in the State.
The State Government not only presumed as anti-national the activity of organising awareness programmes about ILPS in schools/colleges but has also been threatening school/college authorities for organising such programmes, Angamba alleged.
Students have been deliberating on ILPS alone and their agenda does not include driving out non-Manipuris from Manipur.
Angamba maintained that the students' wing would carry forward the ongoing movement.
