Imphal, November 03:
Describing itself as a vigilante group committed to fighting social ills and immorality, the All Manipur United Labourers' Front has condemned yesterday's police assault on its activists as a gross transgression of authoritative power.
Front president Chabungbam Shamu while refuting the slander labeled against his group demanded the unconditional release of its members.
Yesterday, six members of the front including its general secretary were nabbed in a police crack down and materials allegedly picked up by them from various restaurants were recovered.
The front's office was also simultaneously sealed.
Clarifying his stand to mediapersons this afternoon, Shamu stated that the front was clean on its principles.
The raids conducted on restaurants were justifiable as they have become dens for immoral activities.
Besides, the confiscation of cylinders and other items was inevitable to prevent those restaurants from operating without first ensuring a consummate surrounding.
He also put up the need for strict administrative guidelines on operation of restaurants from the Govt's side.
The police should cooperate in its endeavors instead of coming down on them with animosity, he added.
Shamu also owned up levying fines from the offending hoteliers and individuals.
