World Meitei Council celebrates Sth foundation day

Bishnupur, September 28 2026: The 8th foundation day celebration of World Meitei Council (WMC) was held today at INA Martyrs Memorial Hall under the theme 'Celebrating our Heritage, Strengthening our Unity and Inspiring our Future' .

In line with the foundation day celebration, a state level folk song competition was also conducted.

Moirang Assembly Constituency MLA Thongam Shanti; World Meetei Council CEC, Advisor to WMC Assam Unit Yengkhom Dhan Kumar; Moirang Thangjing Yageirel Marup president Moirangthem Nodia Ngangoicha; Salai Kanba Lup Moirang Unit president L Iboyaima, and Ebudhou Thangjing Pana Moirang Sub-division convenor Yumnam Tomba graced as the presidium members of the programme.

Speaking as the chief guest, Moirang AC MLA called for collective efforts from all indigenous communities in Manipur to promote and preserve the indigenous culture and tradition.

'It is not the responsibility of cultural activists alone to work for the promotion of our culture and identity; rather, it is the responsibility of everyone to work earnestly towards this cause,' he said.

It may be noted that the folk song competition was held under two categories, one for the age group below 15 years and the other below 25 years.

Renowned folk singer Lourembam Bedabati Devi, Folk expert Khundrakpam Ibomacha, Theatre expert Longjam Satyajit and Moirang Music College principal Ph Ropendro were the jury members of the said competition.

As a part of the programme, a panel discussion on folk song was also held.
