Lt Gen Konsam Himalay takes new charge

Imphal, August 01 2015 : Lt Gen Konsam Himalay Singh, an alumnus of Sainik School, Goalpara (SSG) on Saturday took over the as the commandant of Infantry School, Mhow in Madhya Pradesh.

The first army general from the Northeast who rose to the level of a corps commander, Lt Gen Singh commanded the 16th Corps under Northern Command, the largest corps of the Indian Army before taking over his new assignment in Mhow, defence spokesman (Ministry of Defence) Col SD Goswami said.

The Infantry School is the alma mater of infantry, the largest and most potent combat arm of the Indian Army.

This premier establishment ranks amongst the top training institutes in the world.

Lt Gen Singh he said, "We should have more generals, air marshals and admirals from my school and students should aspire for the same.

In the years to come, we will surely have many" .

Lt Gen Singh, an officer from the Rajput Regiment, has been decorated with the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) for command of his unit in Operation Vijay and later the Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM) for commanding an army division on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

An avid golfer, mountaineer and sky diver, Lt Gen Singh was commissioned into the Rajput Regiment in 1978 and is an infantry soldier with vast operational experience.

A 1968-batch student of SSG, Lt Gen Singh is married to Mangala Devi, an accomplished doctor.

The couple have two daughters.

He hails from Charangpat village in Thoubal district of Manipur and is also an alumnus of National Defence Academy.
